What Is the Changing of the Guard?

The Changing of the Guard is a ceremony that takes place outside of Buckingham Palace. The Changing of the Guard usually happens every day in the summer and every other day in the autumn. However, it is subject to be cancelled, so we highly recommend that you check the schedule before you leave. The ceremony lasts for about 45 minutes. The ceremony officially starts at 11:30, however, I would recommend getting there at least an hour early.

The closest tube station to get to Buckingham Palace is at St. James's Park and from there it is just a short 5 minute walk.

Where to Stand to View the Changing of the Guard

A lot of people want to be in the very front of the fence holding on looking through the railings, which is a really great idea in theory, but sometimes, especially if you are short, you might either get crushed or not be able to see anything, so I would actually recommend going to the Victoria Memorial. The Victoria Memorial is elevated, so you can actually see over people, and if you get there early enough you can get right at the front, very nice views, very nice pictures.

Additional Tips for Viewing the Changing of the Guard

Another thing with it being so extra crowded location is to definitely watch your belongings. Beware of pickpockets, they do operate in that area. Be sure to bring your camera and enjoy this wonderful British tradition.
