Rabbit Beach, on the island of Lampedusa off the south coast of Sicily, was described as an unspoiled nature reserve that can only be accessed by boat and one of the few places in the Mediterranean where loggerhead sea turtles go to lay their eggs
Aquamarine colours, clarity and calmness of the water are unbelievable! Beautiful soft sand. No seaweed, shells, stones. Just pure sand on sea bottom. Umbrella-free section for sun seekers. Can walk quite far in the water before it gets deep. Though no facilities right at the beach, great little cafe at the start of the 15 minute hike down to the beach. Easy wide hike with views, occasional benches. Cafe will rent umbrellas that you can take down. No development whatsoever by the beach. Daily clean-up of the beach by environmental volunteers keeps beach pristine.
Rabbit beach is paradise on earth. I'd recommend renting a scooter whilst in Lampedusa, as it's the easiest and best way to get around the little island. Rabbit beach is about a 10 minute scooter ride from the centre and then about a 10 minute walk down to the beach. As you walk down towards the beach you come to a vantage point over looking the beach, and the views are just breathtaking. The sand is golden, the water is crystal clear and there are plenty of fish so definitely bring a snorkel, as i spent hours swimming and exploring this truly beautiful place. The only negative was there were quite a lot of jellyfish, so you need to be vigilant.
Crystal clear water, white sandy beach, and fun to explore! Hours are 8:30 - 19:30 and I suggest you get there early to get a good stop. The beach is separated in two areas: one for umbrellas and one that umbrellas aren't allowed. We rented a scooter to avoid the hourly bus schedule, which I assume can get busy at peak times. Also, since the trek to/from the beach from the road/bus stop is about 15 minutes (depending on your photo op stops/fitness level), you may want to opt to bring a picnic. There is a small restaurant if you don't. We didn't eat there.
The water is shallow pretty far out so you can walk for quite a while without swimming. This is nice because there is plenty of room for the people to spread out. There are quite a lot of jellyfish so be weary. I got stung on the finger. Not a big deal :). Lots of fish that can get pretty big, which was cool. Snorkeling looked fun, but the fish aren't colorful so we didn't do it. We did bring floaties, which was a great buy. Lovely to float in the clear water and relax. Be prepared for no amenities. Overall, a lovely beach!
I HAVE TRAVELLED TO MORE THEN 50 COUNTRIES AND IT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BEACH I HAVE EVER SEEN. The beach is perfect even when the weather is not. It is surrounded by cliffs so the wind does not come down onto the beach. Furthermore the water is crystal clear and shallow for children eve 20 meters off shore.
